SPECIAL ACTIONS - FAITH GROUPS

The actions that are listed here have been extra-specially written for faith groups.

If you would like more information on what your faith group could do, or indeed want to tell us what your group has very nicely done, then please go ahead and email nationalrap@refugee-action.org.uk

Special actions for the faithful

Here are some ideas most suited to faith groups wanting to get active.

Keep refugees in your prayers

Some faiths have special prayer days on which refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants are remembered, such as the Day for Special Prayers for Refugees and Migrants in the Catholic Church. Speak to your congregation about how your place of worship can mark these days and use them to highlight current campaigns.

Be helpful, get organising

Organise a drop-in for asylum seekers and refugees and others from the local community. Some faith groups and places of worship already act as distribution centres for food and clothes, or offer English lessons, childcare mornings, computer classes, or free lunches. Others organise market days where cheap food, clothes, toys and household goods are sold. Some organise social evenings and offer a safe place to meet new people.

Champion refugee causes

Lobby your faith group to stand up and take on a policy issue nationally and get other local congregations from different faiths to do the same. People power!

Make folk feel welcome

Introduce newcomers to other residents in your local community and invite people round for a bit of tea and cake or a slap-up dinner. Spending time with a friendly neighbour or making a new friend has a huge impact on whether people feel part of their new community.

Set up your own refugee project

It’s a biggie but you could develop a project to house destitute people seeking asylum, like Open Door and the Boaz Trust.
