Special actions for membership and representative groups

Get stuck into these actions for membership and representative groups.

Champion refugee causes

Lobby your association, institute, union or group to stand up and take on a policy issue nationally and get other local branches to do the same. Once enough grassroots groups demonstrate an interest, there is an official process to decide whether an association or union takes on a campaign at an institutional level. People power!

Earn a badge and make a difference

Groups like the Guides and Scouts can learn about refugee issues and take actions to support local refugees as part of their World Issues badges, and groups like the Ramblers’ Association can help newcomers discover the local countryside through walking groups.

Brush up on your mentoring skills

Professional bodies and associations can get involved in mentoring and befriending work with refugee professionals. Refugee doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, engineers and so forth can benefit massively from a mentor from the same profession who can help them find their way in the UK job market.

Help newcomers feel more local

Refugees may be really keen to get involved in local associations and groups but they usually don’t know what’s on offer locally. Encourage newcomers to join up and get involved in your group, whether it’s a tenants’ association or WI group, through outreach work like talks and meetings or refugee community organisations' newsletters.
