The Marketing Project was set up in 1998 to help refugee community groups and organisations to raise funds, improve their services and promote a positive image of refugees in the UK.
Three members of staff offered consultancy to organisations across the UK covering fundraising, organisational development and publicity. As a part of the consultancy we designed training tailored to the individual needs of groups and brought in outside specialists to enhance a particular area of training (e.g. dealing with the media).
Apart from intensive one-to-one support to individual community groups, we organised seminars and skill-sharing days. The work was organised as a number of 3-6 month projects, which targeted a particular area of development.
The Latin American Welfare Association provides much needed support to Spanish speaking refugees and migrants living in London. Interpreting, legal advice, help with housing and welfare benefits and organising social events are some of their activities.
One service that is rare amongst other grass-roots organisations is a small nursery for 25 children. This childcare facility not only helps parents to study and take a wider range of jobs, but it is also a way of generating income for the organisation. Parents pay very competitive rates and, at the same time, help finance their organisation.
When the core funding for the nursery ran out several years ago, the management committee approached the Marketing Project for help to plan the future of the nursery and fundraise for its core running costs. Within two weeks we were able to draw up a plan of action, identify potential funders and submit a successful funding application to the local authority.
