Description: Refugee Action is hosting a screening of the award-winning film La Forteresse. For the first time, a camera looks into the hidden world of a Swiss reception centre for asylum seekers and immerses us in the daily sorting process of the human diaspora. Awarding it the Golden Leopard, the Locarno festival jury cited ‘a remarkably sensitive film exhibiting profound human intelligence. Discreetly and masterfully realised, but never voyeuristic, and with a message that is directly and evocatively conveyed.’

The screening will be introduced by Refugee Action.

Description: Refugee Action will bringing its interactive display stand and bunting making fun to this free festival of poetry, storytelling, singing and dancing, films, family activities, traditional family games and a free multicultural feast of food. St George’s and members of the Bristol Refugee Week Network join up to present a celebration of the cultural richness of migrant peoples across Bristol and the South West, including local world music performers.

Title of event: Celebrating Sanctuary Fun day

Lead organisation: Tribe of Doris, Bristol City Council and Social Care Directorate

Description: : A day of live dance, music and art from international artists including Polish dancing, Eritrean storytelling, Tibetan music, Somali Aqaal, stories and artefacts, drumming and dance.  Refugee Action will have a stall in the information tent and invites you to get creative by decorating your own Simple Acts pledge to help make a beautiful display of bunting that will grow throughout the day.

Description: Debut of Refugee Action’s new film Forced to Flee:  The voices behind the asylum myths. This is a unique chance to hear first hand the experience of people who have sought sanctuary in Bristol. You will hear them talk with dignity, honesty and humour about their experiences of having to leave their home countries and of their reception and life in the UK.

This is a special event for Councillors, council staff and other city leaders.

Volunteers and colleagues from a refugee background will be attending and hope to be able to share their experiences and answer your questions about asylum and sanctuary in Bristol over refreshments after the showing of extracts of the film.

Description: One day conference - A Practical Guide to Global Education in the Classroom. Refugee Action will be running a practical workshop on teaching about refugee issues in primary and secondary schools.  This is a great opportunity to develop your global education ideas, to discover what others in the region are doing and to find out what support is available to you.
