If you want to make a real impact on the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, why not give a big gift towards one of our specialist projects? We run a range of specialist projects which would not happen without the generous support of individuals, groups, trusts, foundations and companies.
Big gifts of at least £5,000 will change the lives of some of the most marginalised people in the UK through direct support to our specialist projects:
Stopping destitution
Destitution among end-of-process asylum seekers is the largest single issue facing the refugee sector today, affecting an estimated 250,000 people in the UK. We are working to end this inhumane situation which is also ineffective in encouraging asylum seekers to return. Our campaign, launched in partnership with Amnesty International in 2006, has a broad and committed following. And we are running two specialist projects: a campaign to end enforced destitution and a destitution fund providing the most vulnerable with vital support.
Supporting the most vulnerable
Women refugees and asylum seekers are some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Many have suffered traumatic experiences and become lonely and isolated, separated from family members. Our specialist Women’s Friendship Group works directly with these women, to make lasting improvements to their lives.
Investing in our volunteers
Over 200 people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds currently volunteer for Refugee Action. Many are themselves asylum seekers or refugees. Activities range from befriending clients and interpreting, through facilitating workshops and public speaking to research, administration and fundraising. Supporting our volunteers, who give their time and expertise for free enables us to help more refugees and asylum seekers and well as furthering our volunteer’s career development and experience.
Speaking out
Negative and ill-informed media coverage of asylum issues has a very real impact on our clients, who experience first-hand the hostility it creates in their communities. Refugee Action's small Communications Team provides a 24-hour national press office service. We also work pro-actively to promote a more informed and balanced public debate on asylum. We are especially committed to supporting asylum seekers and refugees to tell their stories.
