ESOL/Employability Learning Assistants volunteer – Bradford

“Working English” is a new project to support refugees through the job market, improving their English and assisting them to become job ready.

There will be an eight-week course on employability and English language and the learners will also be supported by mentors to achieve a job or volunteering opportunity.

What is the role?

We are looking to recruit volunteers as Learning Assistants to volunteer alongside project staff to take on the following roles:

  • Deliver planned learning activities at our Working English Course on a Friday morning between 10-12AM.
  • Volunteer with small groups and on a one to one basis with learners in the group
  • Feedback to staff about how students respond to the activities in order to inform planning for future sessions

What are the main duties?

  • Assist staff to deliver and plan for group sessions and individual support plans for each learner
  • Weekly attendance at the group including arriving beforehand to help set up and remaining to help tidy up.
  • 6 weekly supervision sessions with Refugee Action supervisor

What is the time commitment?

  • You’ll need to be available to complete some initial induction and training sessions.
  • We’d reasonably expect you to commit to 3 hours a week at the specific times of 9:30-12:30am on Friday during term time.
  • You may occasionally be invited to accompany the group to job fairs and other trips on other days if you are interested
  • Refugee Action volunteers commit to the service for at least 6 months

Will I receive training and support?

All Refugee Action volunteers will receive:

  • Induction and number of training sessions
  • On-going support from a volunteer supervisor and/or project staff
  • Reasonable expenses to cover travel and lunch

Where would I be based?

You will be based at Refugee Action’s Bradford Office, 40a Piccadilly, BD1 3NN

What skills are we looking for?

  • Understanding of and commitment to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers
  • Ability to complete tasks on own initiative and volunteer independently
  • Ability to volunteer with people from a range of ages and different cultures, experience of this would be an advantage
  • Ability to volunteer within confidentiality, safeguarding and child protection guidelines
  • Ability to communicate in an accurate, brief and clear manner with a good standard of English
  • Ability to provide support to people who might be emotionally vulnerable
  • Ability to prepare and deliver employability and ESOL activities for learner, experience of this would be beneficial.
  • Some teaching experience would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of other language such as Farsi, Kurdish, Albanian, Arabic or Punjabi is helpful but not essential
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Ability to record information accurately (paper files or database)
  • Willingness to develop new knowledge and skills
