Working English is a new project to support refugees through the job market, improving their English and assisting them to become job ready.
There will be an eight-week course on employability and English language and the learners will also be supported by mentors to achieve a job or volunteering opportunity.
What is the role?
We are looking to recruit volunteers as “Employability ESOL Mentors” to volunteer alongside the project coordinator to take on the following roles:
- Assist the Project Coordinator to help develop a support/learning plan for each learner
- Volunteer on one to one basis with refugees who are looking for work. Helping them improve their English language skills and to apply for work.
- Support and encourage learners to access other services and activities in the area
The mentors will be matched with clients on our Working English course who need extra support in their English Language, or in getting them ready for work, like looking for further experience, qualifications or getting qualifications translated.
What are the main duties?
- Aid the Project Coordinator to develop a support plan for each learner
- Hold 1-2-1 weekly meetings with learners
- Support the learner with the development of their English language abilities and other learning needs
- Prepare activities to improve the learner’s English Language and support them to navigate the job market.
- Assist clients with looking for work and volunteer opportunities, supporting them with applications and preparation for interviews.
- Maintain regular contact with project staff about the role and/or any concerns with the learner
- Update database about tasks that have been completed.
- 6 weekly supervision sessions with Refugee Action supervisor
What is the time commitment?
- You’ll need to be available to complete some initial induction and training sessions.
- We’d reasonably expect you to commit to a half day per week to do the home visits (including time to prepare the learning materials)
- You may be invited to accompany your matches to job fairs and similar, to further their understanding of the job market.
- Refugee Action volunteers commit to the service for at least 6 months.
Will I receive training and support?
All Refugee Action volunteers will receive:
- Induction and a number of training sessions;
- On-going support from project staff
- Reasonable expenses to cover travel and lunch
Where would I be based?
You will be based at Refugee Action’s Bradford Office, 40a Piccadilly, BD1 3NN and also in the community.
What skills are we looking for?
- Understanding of and commitment to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers
- Ability to volunteer with people from a range of different cultures, experience of this would be an advantage
- Ability to volunteer within confidentiality and safeguarding guidelines
- Ability to complete tasks on own initiative and volunteer independently
- Ability to communicate in an accurate, brief and clear manner
- Ability to provide support to learners who might be emotionally vulnerable
- Ability to prepare and deliver employability activities, experience of the looking for work and navigating the job market would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of other language such as Farsi, Kurdish, Albanian , Arabic or Punjabi is helpful but not essential
- Punctuality and reliability
- Ability to record information accurately (paper files or database)
- Willingness to develop new knowledge and skills
