At Prime Minister’s Questions today, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the UK has met its commitment to resettled 1,000 refugees from the conflict in Syria before Christmas. Refugee Action welcomes this news.

Stephen Hale, Chief Executive of Refugee Action, said:

“It’s fantastic that Britain has welcomed the 1,000th refugee through the Syrian resettlement programme. It’s a long overdue step change in the government’s response to the plight of Syrian refugees, thanks to the huge groundswell of public sympathy towards refugees over the summer. More can and must be done to help the many thousands more refugees who are making perilous journeys across Europe this winter in search of safety.

“For these refugees and others seeking a safe haven in the UK, this is just the beginning. They now need the best possible support from communities, charities like Refugee Action, and local authorities to rebuild their lives. Building on over 30 years’ experience, Refugee Action is working to ensure that Syrian refugees arriving in Islington and Birmingham are able to integrate into their local communities and able to rebuild their lives in dignity.”
