Reclaiming Lived Experience Leadership Conference: Mapping Power And Dismantling Barriers

By June 26, 2024News story

The Reclaiming Lived Experience Leadership conference was held in London on 25 April 2024. Bringing together 75 staff and volunteers from the UK’s refugee and migration sector and was coordinated by Freedom from Torture, Refugee Action, Refugee Council, and Migration Exchange.

The conference promoted more inclusive approaches in the refugee and migration sectors by focusing on three key areas: defining lived experience leadership, identifying and dismantling barriers to power, and enhancing career opportunities.

The conference considered the definition of lived experience, proposed radical reimaginations of recruitment and employment principles, and advocated wider societal changes to challenge the laws that restrict access to work and the narratives that tokenize people with lived experience.

The conference marked an important moment in the journey towards a more inclusive sector, led by lived experience. There’s an urgent need to continue building momentum across the lived experience movement nationally.

Support from conference sponsors Unbound Philanthropy and ReedSmith LLP made this conference possible.
