Refugee Action responds following the resignation of Amber Rudd MP as Home Secretary.

Stephen Hale, chief executive of Refugee Action, says:

“Our immigration system is in urgent need of reform to ensure it is fair, effective and compassionate.

“The appalling treatment of the Windrush generation has highlighted that it can too often be harmful and cruel. But its failures and hostility go far beyond those impacted by this scandal.

“Every day we see the devastating effect the system has on people forced to flee war and persecution, who come to Britain seeking safety.

“The new Home Secretary must act to change Home Office policies which are too often damaging and dehumanising vulnerable people.

“While there is much that needs to improve, there are also successes to build on. The Syrian resettlement programme has given thousands of refugees the opportunity to rebuild their lives here.

“All refugees in Britain, regardless of how they arrive, should have equal rights and support to successfully rebuild their lives.”
