This morning the European Commission announced plans to overhaul the EU’s asylum system, ending rules obliging refugees to register in the first European country they enter.
Stephen Hale, Chief Executive at Refugee Action, said:
“Refugees fleeing war and persecution need practical help now, not an endless wrangle between European capitals. It’s staggeringly obvious that Greece and other countries on the European front-line of the refugee crisis should not have to act alone. Existing policies have failed the test of the current crisis. The British government should lose no time in stepping up and pledging to do more.”
