Refugee Action responds to detention of people seeking asylum

By April 29, 2024Press release

Responding to reports that the Government will use routine appointments and bail meetings to round up and detain people seeking asylum, Refugee Action Chief Executive Tim Naor Hilton said:

“Shackling and jailing people before deporting them thousands of miles away is the cold, hard reality of the Government’s violent and racist Rwanda plan.

“The trauma and pain this hostile plan is unleashing in minority communities across the UK is unimaginable and will most likely drive people to the margins.

“We must all be concerned. History has shown us that once Governments start removing people’s rights, they often find it hard to stop.

“What works for refugees works for us all. We need a transformed asylum system that respects people’s human rights, processes their claims quickly, and supports them to rebuild their lives here.”
