The UK Supreme Court has ruled that the Government’s refugee deportation deal with leaders in Rwanda is unlawful.
In response, Tim Naor Hilton, Chief Executive of Refugee Action, said:
“This grubby cash-for-humans deportation deal will always be a grim symbol of the cruelty and hostility of previous Home Secretaries towards people seeking asylum.
“It’s now time to scrap this inhumane and unworkable deal and any similar plans it has with other countries – and consign to history the awful and totally unworkable Illegal Migration Act that supports them.
“For too long the Government’s approach to refugee protection has been deeply grounded in dehumanisation, criminalisation, and racism.
“We hope the new Home Secretary changes tack and creates a rights-based refugee system, one in which people can safely reach the UK, have the right to claim asylum when they get here, and are treated with dignity and fairness while their claims are processed.”
