Refugee Action, Save the Children, Amnesty International UK & more mark 1.4 million actions for refugees

By September 9, 2015October 25th, 2016Press release

This morning Refugee Action along with Save the Children, Citizens UK, The Independent, Amnesty International UK, Avaaz and 38 Degrees will gather in front of the Houses of Parliament to celebrate 1.4 million actions taken by British public in response to the refugee crisis. The event comes in the wake of a huge public outcry for Britain to do more for refugees seeking safety.

The event takes place prior to Prime Minister’s Questions, and in the run-up to the EU home affairs ministerial meeting on Monday 14 September. It’s clearer than ever that the British people want the Prime Minister to do more to welcome refugees. Having pledged to resettle up to 20,000 Syrians to the UK during this Parliament, the Prime Minster is coming under increasing pressure to make a clear commitment for the year ahead as part of a comprehensive response to the current crisis.

In response Stephen Hale commented:

“The public support for these petitions is just incredible. But it’s just one of the hundreds of ways in which people are stepping up to help refugees. Refugee Action is truly inspired by this support and compassion. We will do all we can to support both existing and new asylum seekers and refugees to rebuild their lives here in the UK .”
