Mark Nowottny

Mark is a policy, advocacy and communications strategist who has spent 17 years campaigning in the UK and internationally for social justice and equality.

Before joining Refugee Action's Board, Mark served as the International Rescue Committee's UK advocacy director, helping people forcibly displaced from their homes and facing crisis. Previously, Mark worked in senior roles with Malala Fund, led by Malala Yousafzai, with peacebuilding organisation International Alert, with youth-led development agency Restless Development and with Johannesburg-based global civil society alliance CIVICUS. Mark has also worked in UK politics, serving from 2017 to 2018 as the Labour Party's Political Advisor to the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. He has lived and worked in South Africa, Sierra Leone and the Caribbean, and began his career working with a London homelessness shelter and a Jamaican human rights organisation supporting prisoners facing the death penalty.
