What is the role?

Expert by Experience ( EbE) is the term we use for people with lived experience of the UK asylum system. We have opportunities for people with lived experience to join our EbE groups- RAS Voice and EbE Fundraising Group.

At Refugee Action, we have a vision of the UK in which refugees and people seeking asylum will be welcome, can get justice, live free of poverty and successfully rebuild their lives.  We empower refugees and people seeking asylum to influence both our work, the issues that matter to them and decisions made by government, and we are a trusted partner for others who share our vision.

RAS Voice- is a campaign group supported by Refugee Action and represented by refugees and people seeking asylum. The purpose of the group is to campaign for the better asylum system and influence the Home Office to make a refugee protection system which is just, compassionate, and effective.

We are looking for refugees/ people seeking asylum who are passionate about the campaign work and want to join our brilliant EbE network.


EBE Fundraising Advisory Group – Is an opportunity to help engage and encourage people across the country to support Refugee Action and people seeking safety in the UK. As a member of this group, you would have the chance to feed into how Refugee Action fundraises and to help raise vital funds for to keep our services going.

We are looking for refugees and people seeking asylum who are looking for a creative challenge and an opportunity to develop new skills in fundraising and marketing.


What is the time commitment?

RAS Voice

  • You’ll need to be available to complete an initial induction (this would fit around the times you are available)
  • We’d reasonably expect you to commit to 2 hours per week (additional hours may be required and this can be flexible around your needs)

Fundraising Advisory Group

  • You would be expected to commit 2 hours every other week for a six month period.


Will I receive training and support?

All Refugee Action EbEs will receive:

Inductions and opportunities to attend training sessions


RAS Voice: (campaign, media, digital, research, facilitation, e-marketing trainings)

  • On-going support from an EBE Coordinator
  • Expenses to cover a refreshment during the sessions.
  • Expenses to cover travel when needed.
  • Access to the internet and facilities.

Fundraising Advisory Group

  • Access to the internet and facilities
  • Expenses to cover a refreshment during the sessions.
  • Each session is split into two, the first hour focuses on training in different types of fundraising and marketing.
    • Topics covered include:
      • Fundraising campaigns by post
      • Approaching organisations for donations
      • Writing engaging and persuasive communications.


Where would I be based?

During the Covid pandemic, Refugee Action is following Government Guidance and the EBEs are home working. We will provide the equipment you need in order to do your role at home including access to the internet.

Some of our offices have reopened, we can discuss whether you would like to come into your local office.


What are the main duties?

  • Attending the RAS Voice meetings regularly
  • Participating in the group campaign projects/discussions
  • Representing the group internally and externally
  • Depending on your interests being a spokesperson of the group in media.
  • Participating in research projects
  • Collaborating with external EBE groups

Fundraising Advisory Group

  • Attending the EBE Fundraising Advisory Group meetings
  • Participating in the group fundraising projects/discussions
  • Representing the group internally and externally
  • Taking part in brainstorming activities
  • Feeding into and helping create supporter communications


What skills are we looking for?

We will support the EBEs to get/ improve the skills they are looking for. However, joining RAS Voice/ EBE Fundraising will require some skills:


  • Being passionate about campaigning/ fundraising
  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Ability to work with people from a range of different cultures and backgrounds
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Basic IT skills
  • Able to work as part of a team
