Navigator Project Volunteer

Do you want to be part of a team that supports resettled refugees to join in community activities across Birmingham?

What is the role?

To be part of the Navigator Project working with Syrian and Afghan refugees who have resettled in Birmingham.  Volunteers will support the team organising events and social activities for refugees. Volunteers will also support refugees to find out about and join in community and leisure activities in Birmingham.

Main Volunteer Duties

  • Supporting the team with admin tasks before events
  • Supporting the team at events and social activities for families
  • Support refugees to plan travel to events and activities.
  • Use the Internet and social media to find out about other activities in Birmingham for refugees and their families.
  • Supporting refugees to attend new activities in small groups.
  • Meeting with the team regularly to plan what you will do.

What is the time commitment?

  • 1-2 days a week Mon – Fri 10 am – 4pm, plus 1 Saturday a month.
  • 1-2 days training.
  • We are looking for people who can volunteer for at least 6 months.

Will I receive training and support?

All volunteers will have:

  • An induction and ongoing training.
  • Support from the Navigator Project Team.
  • Expenses for travel within Birmingham.
  • I.T equipment will be provided if needed
  • Volunteer support and supervision every 6 – 8 weeks.

Where will I volunteer?

In the Birmingham office and at community events across Birmingham

What skills are we looking for?

(You do not have to have all these skills)

  • A good level of English
  • Reliable and well organised
  • Great team working skills.
  • Good IT skills and confident using a range of digital technologies (smartphones, laptops etc)
  • Understanding of the needs of asylum seekers, refugees, and other displaced people.
  • Willingness to work to the principles of equal opportunities and confidentiality.
  • Speakers of Arabic/ Pashto/ Dari (not essential)

References and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Check

We ask for two references from all our volunteers.

The role also may require a DBS Check, but we will confirm this. Having a criminal record will not stop us from considering your application to volunteer. We will consider every applicant and their circumstances carefully.

Applicants for this role must be 18 years old or above.
